[texts]Reynolds Number Effects on the Performance of Ailerons and Spoilers (Invited) - Mineck, R. E
The influence of Reynolds number on the performance of outboard spoilers and ailerons was investigated on a generic subsonic transport configuration in the National Transonic Facility over a chord Reynolds number range from 3 to 30 million and a Mach number range from 0.70 to 0.94. Spoiler deflection angles of 0, 10, and 20 degrees and aileron deflection angles of -10, 0, and 10 degrees were tested...

The effect is reported to design, fabricate, test and evaluate a prototype experimental system for the control of surgically induced infections. The purpose is to provide the cleanest possible environment within a hospital surgery room and eliminate contamination sources that could cause infections during surgery. The system design is described. The system provides for a portable laminar flow clean room, a full bubble helmet system with associated communications and ventilation subsystems for op...

[texts]The First Diffraction-Limited Images from the W. M. Keck Telescope - Matthews, K.
The first diffraction limited, 0.05s resolution, images on the W. M. Keck Telescope have been obtained at a wavelength of 2.2 micrometers. These images were part of an experiment to test the suitability of the Keck Telescope for speckle imaging. In order to conduct this test, it was necessary to modify the pixel scale of the Keck facility Near Infrared Camera (NIRC) to optimally sample the spatial frequencies made available by the Keck telescope...

Subspace and Lanczos iterations have been developed, well documented, and widely accepted as efficient methods for obtaining p-lowest eigen-pair solutions of large-scale, practical engineering problems. The focus of this paper is to incorporate recent developments in vectorized sparse technologies in conjunction with Subspace and Lanczos iterative algorithms for computational enhancements. Numerical performance, in terms of accuracy and efficiency of the proposed sparse strategies for Subspace a...

[texts]Applications of the Electrodynamic Tether to Interstellar Travel - Matloff, Gregory L.
After considering relevant properties of the local interstellar medium and defining a sample interstellar mission, this paper considers possible interstellar applications of the electrodynamic tether, or EDT. These include use of the EDT to provide on-board power and affect trajectory modifications and direct application of the EDT to starship acceleration. It is demonstrated that comparatively modest EDTs can provide substantial quantities of on-board power, if combined with a large-area electr...

Differences identified with Coflon behaviour will be of scientific interest as well as appropriate to project applications, as Tef...

[texts]Reflectance Spectroscopy of Palagonite and Iron-Rich Montmorillonite Clay Mixtures: Implications for the Surface Composition of Mars - Orenberg, James
Mixtures of a Hawaiian palagonite and an iron-rich, montmorillonite clay (15.8 /- 0.4 wt% Fe as Fe2O3) were evaluated as Mars surface spectral analogs from their diffuse reflectance spectra. The presence of the 2.2 microns absorption band in the reflectance spectrum of clays and its absence in the Mars spectrum have been interpreted as indicating that highly crystalline aluminous hydroxylated clays cannot be a major mineral component of the soil on Mars...

[texts]Mg 2 emission of Pop. 2 long-period Cepheids - Parthasarathy, M.
The population II Cepheid pulsational variables AL Vir (P = 10.3 days) and W Vir (P = 17.3 days) were observed with IUE at two phases each. Only low dispersion mid-UV exposures were feasible, but were sufficient to show a great range in Mg II emission behavior. The relationship to phase variation of emission in classical (Pop. I) Cepheids of long period is unclear.

[texts]ROSAT study of the HEAO-1 x ray source and potential DQ star, 1H0709-360 Hercules - Shafter, Alle
The status of a ROSAT study of the HEAO-1 x ray source and potential DQ Her star, 1H0709-360, is reported in which approximately 14 Ksec of PSPC data were obtained and reduced. The principal goal was to search for a periodic signal in the x ray flux that would be characteristic of the rotation of an accreting magnetized white dwarf in the system. A detection of an x ray periodicity distinct from the orbital period would provide the first direct evidence that 1H0709-360 is in fact a DQ Her system...
